- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 18817403, 3 months agoAs of 2/4/25 it's currently not marking videos on the main youtube page as watched even if I've watched them. It's working on the subscription page and in search.

posted 3 months agoI just released version 4.7.1 with some small fixes, did this update start marking videos again on the main page by chance? If not, could you open an issue here [1] with some more details such that I can take a closer look? Thanks in advance!

[1] https://github.com/sniklaus/youtube-watchmarker/issues - Rated 4 out of 5by piecevcake, 9 months agoVery useful, nicely structured, would be 5 stars if
1) it didn't slow YT videos to an almost complete lag; (database 4495)
---Would marking the text (purple or red) instead of the image use less resources?
---I have many unloaded tabs of videos, is something collating all those unloaded tabs each time?
2) it said when each option marks a video- do any mark when they are queued? When do the YT options mark them? When does history matk them
3) once you have a collection in memory, which ones are needed to update it? - Rated 4 out of 5by Hasse, 2 years agoWorks great in standard desktop mode, does not work when viewing youtube from the mobile feed, on a computer and a regular browser....
- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 17933650, 2 years agoHandy extension that actually fills a real need rather than just adding fluff! Two nice additional features would be 1) The ability to mark a video "unwatched" and 2) The ability to set a threshold (in seconds, maybe?) after which the video is marked "watched". Right now, simply loading the video (but not even playing it) marks the thumbnail as watched. Great extension nonetheless.
- Rated 4 out of 5by Nayr, 2 years agoPlease add an option to have the extension hide the mark the videos as not interested or hide them in some way please.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Byron1c, 3 years agoUPDATE: Unfortunately due to YTs cursor over to play feature, any video that I accidentally cursor over gets marked as viewed, just to be aware
Youtube has started removing the watched indicator / red line on videos, and this not only restores that functionality perfectly, it does it better visually. I definitely recommend it! - Rated 4 out of 5by lac29, 4 years agoReally simple and effective since Youtube is very poor at marking what you've already watched. This addon does a great job but the only gripe might be that simply by starting a youtube video and watching a few secs will mark a video as watched and I don't think there is a way to undo/unmark it.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14871408, 5 years agoI really like this extension, I would give it 5 stars if 1. it didn't show the videos watched on mobile as just the length of the video instead of the title and 2. I could go through the history in the extension to delete the dumb stuff, because I use it to catalogue progress watching all of certain channels. Otherwise, this is my favorite extension next to adblock.

Switching to new theme fixed it! Thank you. I don't like the new theme but as we all know they will be switching to it eventually so I'll just deal with it.
This add-on was working fine for me and then it was updated (yesterday?) and no longer does anything. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and syncing the cache and it shows the videos I've watched on the settings page but it no longer marks them when on YouTube when trying to select the next video that I want to view. I wish there was a way to roll back to the prior version.Developer response
posted 5 years agoMy apologies for the trouble! Do you use the old Youtube theme by chance?
The newest update is a complete rewrite and only supports the new Youtube theme since the old one will officially be removed soon. I rewrote the addon since there were some fundamental bugs that I wanted to fix that required some more thorough changes, and supporting the old Youtube theme would have taken a considerable amount of effort during the rewrite.
If you are using the old Youtube theme then you could simply switch to the new one (https://youtube.com/new) and everything should work as usual again. If you want to stick to the old theme then you could switch back to the previous version of this extension. To do so, you can manually install it from the version history (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-watchmarker/versions/) and disable automatic updates for the Youtube Watchmarker in the settings of Firefox (in the "Manage Your Extensions" settings, click on the three dots next to the Youtube Watchmarker and say "Manage", then select the option for "Allow automatic updates: off") such that you stay with that version.
If you are not using the old Youtube theme then ignore my suggestions and open an issue here such that we can look into this further to find the root cause: https://github.com/sniklaus/youtube-watchmarker/issues

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 13710465, 5 years agoIt breaks the thumbnails on the home page, otherwise it works fine.

:: Simon - Rated 4 out of 5by Nijaz Muratović, 5 years agogood because it allows exporting everything and importing it later, and it is actually base64 encoding so we can edit it with text editor maybe, hope extension for chrome and opera, bad because actually shows wrong videos in sidebar on right being watched, misalignment, but luckily this sidebar can be hidden via another extension called Youtube Enhancer

- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 13884462, 5 years agoJust a heads up, Looks like the most recent update to Youtube vaguely breaks this add-on. All the video thumbnails on the homepage sorta... double in height for some reason, at least that's been my experience.

:: Simon - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 14366081, 6 years agoNeeds more control over the overlay effect. It's good in the light YT theme, but could be darker in the dark YT theme.
Just FYI, it's not compatible with Youtube Enhancer when using a theme, or vice versa. The overlay is removed.Developer response
posted 6 years agoI have never switched to the dark theme and haven't yet considered that it may be a problem. You are completely right though and I appreciate that you pointed this out to me. I will try to address this in the next version.
- Simon - Rated 4 out of 5by tipar, 6 years agoAwesone, you open the video and automatically it is greyed out but it would be more awesome if we could manually mark the video as watched witout actually open the video.
- Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 13819733, 7 years agoNot sure it works permanently. Old videos I've watched are not being marked.
I'm looking for an extension that permanently stores YouTube history, and this seems to be a decent but imperfect solution.Developer response
posted 7 years agoThe extension does what you are asking for. However, your history of watched videos cannot come out of nowhere. Thus, if you did not synchronize the extension with your browser history (your browser history could be incomplete) or YouTube (you may not be logged in) then you will not see old videos marked as watched.
- Simon - Rated 4 out of 5by Firefox user 13521073, 7 years agoIt works great for what I need it to except for 1 minor problem. My subscriptions page just shows a blank white screen when this is enabled. For me to be able to view the videos in my subscriptions the way I want to, I need to disable this addon, click view subscriptions so the videos show up, then click to re-enable the addon so I can easily see which video I've watched.

posted 7 years agothank you for your review, you are the first person to raise this issue. would you mind moving the discussion over to the issue tracker on github? https://github.com/sniklaus/youtube-watchmarker/issues
thanks again - simon - Rated 4 out of 5by George Hazard, 8 years agoWorks well but I wish it had the ability to hide watched videos so that they don't clutter up the subscriptions feed.

- Rated 4 out of 5by Yaku, 8 years agoUpdate:
(04.01.2020) Add-on still works but I too have recently run into bug? creating double thumbnails. Few people complained about add-on being broken. Actulaly the problem is with youtube's new layout not add-on.
Simple solution for it is adding "f6=8" value (without quotes) to a PREF cookie, r creating PREF cookie with this value if you don't have one already.
That value will change youtube layout to old layout.
Original review:
Add-on itself is very useful as it makes my life much easier.
However, I tend to open several videos at once and then watch them. I have noticed that add-on marks videos as watched the moment I open them in new tab, without actually hitting the play button.
It would make much more sense, for me anyway, if the add-on marked videos as watched after I watched them, not before.Developer response
posted 8 years agohi yaku,
thank you for your feedback, i understand your concerns. however, there might be some users who stop watching certain movies a minute or two before they are over because they might contain advertisements. in this case, the video would not be marked as watched, contrary to what they expect. handling this issue is thus quite a challenge.

this issue in Version 1.8.1, i need to work with this Version, so please solve this issue. Thanks again.Developer response
posted 9 years agohi ayam,
thank you for bringing this up. please make sure that you have the newest version of the addon. the most recent updated does not need a login anymore and is thus even more convenient to use.
thank you - simon
edit: i just saw that you are required to use version 1.8.1 - unfortunately however, google does not provide access to the watch history via their api anymore - i am therefore sorry to say that i have no possibility to bring this feature back into the previous version: https://code.google.com/p/gdata-issues/issues/detail?id=4642#c83
